A 7z file is basically an archived file with a 7z file extension. 7z files are created using file compression tools, the most popular of which is 7-Zip. 7z files are similar to other archives formats like RAR, ZIP, and ISO but have a higher compression ratio and may include AES-256 encryption.
However, some 7z unpacking software like Unarchiver scans all files before extracting them. It also warns you if the files contain any viruses. This ensures that you never unwittingly extract malware-infected files, thus keeping your computer reasonably safe from malware.

The official file unpacking software for 7z files is 7-Zip. Unfortunately, 7-Zip is only available on Windows. But, you could still run it on Mac with an application like Parallels Desktop for Mac. However, in this post, we're going to assume that you've not installed it yet.
Although Mac comes equipped with in-built programs that help decompress Zip, ISO, and other file types, it doesn't come with a preloaded program for opening 7z files. That being said, you can still unzip 7z Mac files using external software like Unarchiver.
Sets solid mode. The default mode is s=on. In solid mode, files are grouped together. Usually, compressing in solid mode improves the compression ratio. Use a larger block size for data types that are more efficiently compressed, like text.
7-Zip is a free, open source, cross-platform, very fast, archive file manager. It supports a wide variety of formats (like 7z, zip, tar, wim, iso, rar, and rpm) and can be run from the command line or as a graphical application. Unlike the old Zip archives, modern 7-Zip archives (in 7z format) can be up to 16,000,000 TB in size!

If you are uploading encrypted Zip files to Amazon or Azure, it's possible that file names and paths are being extracted and indexed, perhaps by Cortana in OneDrive, even though you intend to keep the contents of the Zip files 100% private. When you e-mail encrypted Zip files to others, or upload/download such files through proxy servers, it is also possible that the e-mail gateways and proxy servers are examining and logging the plaintext file names and paths in the otherwise-encrypted Zip files too. In some countries, just having suspicious file names could land you in jail.
A yardstick cryptographers use to measure encryption strength is "bits of entropy", and you can read about how entropy is calculated for keys derived from human passwords, which includes suggestions about how to choose a good passphrase. In short, the passphrase should be at least 25 characters long with some complexity. 7-Zip supports passphrases in excess of 1000 characters. The real solution is to use a password manager application (like KeePass) to secure and provide convenient access to your 7-Zip passphrases. (More on this below.)
The 7-Zip encryption passphrase can be over 1000 characters in length. This is too long for a human to enter by hand, but a 50-character passphrase might be stored in a password manager application, like KeePass.
In summary, when encrypting small chunks of data, like credit card numbers and passphrases, KeePass can be scripted with PowerShell. When encrypting gigabytes of data, 7-Zip can be scripted with PowerShell too. Combining these tools and PowerShell together, we can automate the solution to many data encryption problems (for free). And because KeePass and 7-Zip are cross-platform, we can hopefully interoperate with Mac and Linux users too.

While 7-Zip may sound like a good name for a PC virus, it's actually a legitimate utility that compresses and decompresses files. It also comes with a built-in file manager that helps you manage those files. If you share a computer, such as for business purposes, someone else may have installed 7-Zip without telling you. An IT person may also have installed the program on your computer. While it doesn't hurt to leave the app on your computer, you can delete 7-Zip quickly if you think you don't need it.
If you'd like to remove 7-Zip, press your "Windows" key to open the Start screen. You can then right-click the 7-Zip icon and then click "Uninstall" to view the Programs and Features window. This window displays your installed programs and highlights 7-Zip, the app you right-clicked. When you click the window's "Uninstall/Change" button, Windows removes 7-Zip from your computer. Before clicking that button, ensure that 7-Zip is highlighted; you don't want to uninstall the wrong application. You don't have to reboot your computer after removing 7-Zip.
So should you go out and get 7-ZIP to zip your files? It depends. The only issue with programs like 7-ZIP and WinRAR, both of which did the best in compression, is that they use proprietary formats that are not fully supported on other systems.

eDecoder is a plugin for the popular archiver 7-Zip. It enables 7-Zip to handle many different types of mailboxes (files that contain email messages) like archives. It also enables 7-Zip to handle email message files like archives. Thanks to eDecoder, you can easily extract an email message or only an email attachment from a mail base without using the email client that created that mail base. Moreover, eDecoder enables 7-Zip to open so-called web archive files (MIME HTML files, which usually have the extension MHT or MHTML), as well as to open or create UUE and XXE encoded files.
7-Zip doesn't allow you to directly select the eSplitter codec as a compression method when packing files into a 7z file, so you need to enter the packing parameters into the Parameters field. We recommend using a parameters string like this:
In Windows, the easiest way to encrypt an archive is to do it directly from a program like WinZip. All you have to do is select the files, open the Actions menu, and choose Encrypt. Then just choose what type of encryption you want and enter a good password.
If you use the 7Z format or another available format, opening the file will open the 7-Zip File Manager. If you use the ZIP format, you can open this in Windows File Explorer like any other zipped file. You can also open it using the 7-Zip File Manager.
You can create ZIP folders on Mac just as easily, thanks to the built-in Finder app. There are also alternatives to 7-Zip and Windows File Explorer for Windows users, like WinZIP, which also supports file encryption and compression as standard.
