The album was worked on simultaneously with the three mixtapes that anticipated it; In My Zone, Fan of a Fan, and In My Zone 2. The album's aesthetics feature a multicolored pop-art graffiti imagery, conceived by Brown himself, Courtney Walter and American contemporary artist Ron English. F.A.M.E. shows a wide variety of musical genres including R&B, pop, hip hop, dancehall, soft rock and Europop, while the lyrical content concentrates on finding positivity in life. The album received mixed reviews from music critics, who generally praised the production, but criticized the content and Brown's performances. The album received three Grammy Award nominations at the 54th Grammy Awards, winning Best R&B Album which was Brown's first Grammy Award. It also won Top R&B Album at the 2012 Billboard Music Awards and Album of the Year at the 2011 Soul Train Music Awards.
The album's third single, titled "Love More" featuring Nicki Minaj, was announced, which Brown performed the song along with Minaj at the 2013's BET Awards. On July 19, he released its cover artwork.[45] On July 16, the song was released for digital download[46] and a week later, the song was sent to rhythmic contemporary radio.[47] The music video was officially released on August 17, 2013.[48] The song has since peaked at number 23 on the US Billboard Hot 100.[38]

On December 19, 2013, the album's fourth single, titled "Loyal", was released for digital download on iTunes. The official recording sessions for the album began in August 2018 and ended in May 2019, with some songs being recorded earlier during the first months of 2018, while a couple songs from the extended edition were recorded a few years prior. The cover art for the album was revealed on May 14, 2019, along with the back cover. The front cover artwork was designed by graffiti artist Saturno and features a purple-haired Chris Brown's face in space, surrounded by fictional monsters and flying saucers, while the back cover, designed by visual artist Jeff Cole, continues the supernatural theme with a levitating body over a pyramid.[15] The CD's interior illustrations were handled by 3D artists and concept designers Circle Circle Math and Sarper Baran, that worked over a photoshoot done by Jake Miosge, Brown's official tour photographer.[16][17]
